L2-L3 is one of the most common levels for spinal disc problems to occur.
There are many people who have no idea why this level causes problems, and that’s because it has been assumed a lot of times this might be due to some sort of scoliotic curve in the spine (an S-shaped curvature) and when you look at an MRI section it indeed looks like there is some kind of deformation or hump. But if you look closer, those little humps actually correspond to joint surfaces between each lumbar vertebrae.
But there are exceptions…
A small minority of people show a real hump in their L2-L3 disc space – pictured below with a red arrow.
And these people usually have some degree of leg pain either in the back or down the leg. The disc itself is not actually bad but it’s not good for them.
What makes this type of deformation ultimately dangerous over time is that it produces very little direct pain since there are very few nerve endings (pain receptors) inside the actual disc and they are all at its outer rim where they belong. But what really happens is that when you sit on a curved seat that buttock muscles start contracting to hold your body straight. In other words, whenever you sit your L2-L3 area becomes slightly compressed and if you do this for many years without making a change everything will go downhill.
Unfortunately, many people see their doctor and just give them painkillers without changing anything about the way they sit all day long i.e. keep doing the exact same thing that is making their problem worse. And trust me – it’s not very hard to make things better if you know what you’re doing!
There can be various conditions with the L2-L3 disc.
These are the most common MRI readings in case of L2-L3 disc. Listhesis of L2-L3 disc is an uncommon condition in every case of the Lumbar problems. But it can appear in few accidental cases.
The second lumbar nerve which originates from the L2-L3 disc region supplies to the different areas of the lower limb especially front of the thigh and shin of the femur. It gives supply to the upper part of the lower back muscles like Quadratus lumborum and Iliopsoas muscle. Both of these muscles are responsible for the maintenance of the lordosis of the spine. Therefore any problem with this nerve will give severe back pain too.
Symptoms of the L2-L3 disc herniation are according to the supply of the nerve.
If their L2-L3 disc problem is circumferential bulge or herniation it can also give symptoms of L3 never compression too. In this case, it compresses the L3 transversing nerve. Thus MRI scan helps in deciding the proper treatment of the problem.
This condition appears in aged persons mostly. And that too along with bulge is other discs. In chronic cases of L4-L5 and L5-S1- the L2-L3 disc herniation is really very much common. So it is important work on all aspects of the condition.
The main thing about every slip disc case of L2-L3 or any other disc is – surgery is never a solution. Because almost in all cases disc is not the culprit. The problem might be somewhere else. And a diagnosis of the condition is important. Due to which reason, this disc is deflated- it is important to know about. The moment we can underline the cause of the problem, it becomes easy to treat the case. The same is applicable for the ayurvedic treatment for the l2-l3 disc problem.
There is a small muscle- Quadratus lumborum. This muscle origin from the lumbar vertebrae- l1 to l5 and then fix the lumbar region to the iliac crest. While sitting in slouching posture- the upper fibers of this muscle strains and this leads to an L2-L3 disc problems.
Ayurveda refers to the lower back as Kati. Kati is the sthaan of Vata and specially a subset of Vata- Apaan Vayu. When there is a regular disturbance of Vata because of the diet which can cause slip disc or lifestyle causing slip disc. There will be problem with the lower back. It happens vice-versa.
Snighdha Virechana is the treatment for most of these cases. Snigdha nitya virechana is done by using oil based medicines which are purgatives. This approach settles the dryness of the Vata and also removes the toxins. Pancha Prasrutaki Bastis are the second line of the treatment.
Therapeutic yoga is also done on these patients. But in case of old aged patients where multiple discs are bulged we do Rasayana therapy for such patients. So that we can reverse the degeneration of the discs upto some extent.
So if you have L2-L3 disc problem and you want to get ayurvedic treatment for L2-L3 disc problem. You just need to send us your MRI, our physicians will check every detail and will guide you accordingly for the treatment.
