The disks are protective shock-absorbing pads between the bones of the spine. Although they do not actually "slip," a disk may split or rupture. This can cause the disk to fail, allowing the gel (which is part of the disk) to escape into the surrounding tissue. The leaking jellylike substance can place pressure on the spinal cord or on a single nerve fiber and cause symptoms of pain either around the damaged disk or anywhere along the area controlled by that nerve.
The layman's term "slipped disk" is, therefore, a misnomer and actually refers to a condition whereby portions of an abnormal, injured, or degenerated disk have protruded against nerve tissues. This condition is also known as a herniated, ruptured, prolapsed, or more commonly, slipped disk. The most frequently affected area is in the low back, but actually any disk can rupture, including those in the neck.
This is what modern science thinks about the inter-vertebral discs and problems related with that. Still there are certain questions related to the same till now unanswered.....
1. Why these cases are increasing all over the world day by day?
2. Is there any way to heal the condition without any operation?
3. How can one maintain the right alignment of the Spine?
These are the most basic questions which are in mind of everyone and unanswered by doctors of modern day.
It might sound confusing still Ayurveda has all the answers related to the "Slipped Disc" condition, more exactly this is not a condition in Ayurveda (Slipped Disc), Ayurveda has a more "wholesome" approach and vision about the human body and they have a lot to think about all the conditions. Ayurveda has divided all the tissues in seven different parts.
These all seven parts are known as Dhatus, according to Ayurveda. A Dhatu is a part of the body which holds the body, nourishes the body to life. There are three Dhatus- Mamsa, Asthi and Majja. These all three Dhatus are responsible for the "MUSCULO SKELETAL SYSTEM" of the body. Spine and disc all are related with the same systems- three counter parts.
Mamas or muscles hold everything in place and facilitates movements by "shrinking" and "expanding" the different skeletal structures.
Asthi...bones give support, shape and structure to the body and by joining each other these bones make joints, to provide movements.
Majja is a wide term, used differently in Ayurveda and told to support all the movements by lubrication of the inner surfaces of the bony joints.
So we can see that all these three are involved in the disease like - Slipped Disc or more scientifically saying the condition of- Protrusion of Inter-vertebral Disc.
Prognosis of Slipped Disc According Ayurveda?
Ayurveda considers that all these diseases related to the bones, joints and movements are "Hard to cure" because these joints are better known as Marma- the points where pain will be more intense than any other part of the body.
So to cure this condition, one should be patient enough! This is curable! The main thing one needs is to remain aware about the problem. Ignorance is always a sin!
