Slipped Disc is a condition where, one or more intervertebral discs which are situated in between the vertebrae within the back bone is/ are displaced from their normal position.  Because these all discs are made up of the soft tissue so with sudden pressure or jerk these dislocate or rupture and start pressing either nerves or to the spinal cord, which results in the pain in the supply area of that particular nerve. Slipped Disc is a layman term, the right term for the condition is- Herniated Disc or Intervertebral Disc!

As said above all these terms signify the same problem of displaced intervertebral disc. These are one and the same thing.

Our back bone comprises of small pieces of bones known as vertebrae. It is because of this arrangement of small bone that bending and twisting movements are possible in back bone. To minimize the friction between these vertebrae; ring shaped structures of soft tissue are present in between all these vertebrae. These ring shaped soft tissue structure is called as inter- vertebral disc.

The specific thing about the diseases of the back bone is its structure. The back bone comprises of many small bone known as vertebrae. These are interconnected with each other by ligaments and muscle fibers. In between two vertebrae a soft cushion like structure is present; the intervertebral disc. It enables backbone for jerk free smooth movements. Problem arises when this disc is displaced from its normal position because of any reason. This displaced disc compresses the nerve or the spinal cord which is passing through the nearby area. This results in Sciatica, or some similar conditions.

The other problems which can be caused in backbone are Osteoporosis, Osteosarcoma, Spondylolisthesis and Osteoarthritis. Osteoporosis is a disease in which the bones become fragile due to decrease in the density of bone. This disease actually leads to a porous bone which is soft and compressible. Osteosarcoma is also known as the cancer of bones. This happens in the tissue of the bone due to a cancerous tumor that destroys the normal tissue. It arises from the osteoid tissue of the bone.

Spondylolisthesis is defined as the frontward or the rearward movement of the vertebrae in the column. This occurs due to the slippage of the pars articularis discs present between the vertebrae. The backbone loses its original shape and the patient suffers from chronic pains. Osteoarthritis is a disease caused due to the defect in the joints between the bones. Synovium is a membrane in the joints which secretes a fluid to lubricate the joints otherwise friction might be caused which can lead to Osteoarthritis. If the secretion is reduced, the person is more likely to have the disease.

The bone is a living tissue so back bone is liable to all diseases like any other tissue tends to have; like infections.

Sciatica is the name of the major nerve supplying the lower limbs. There are two sciatic nerves; one for each limb. When the roots of this nerve are involved then the resulting problem is named as Sciatica and the fellow experience the pain or different sensations in supply area of Sciatic nerve which is the skin on the back of the thigh, buttocks and the entire lower leg (Except its inner aspect). Where in word "Herniated disc" Hernia means the protrusion of an organ through the wall of the cavity that normally contains; here the affected organ is the internertebral disc. So in Herniated Disc; disc is not at its normal position and this displaced disc compresses the spinal cord or a single nerve which is passing through the adjoining area. Here if the nerve being compressed is "Sciatica" the signs and symptoms will that of Sciatic pain. So in brief; Herniated disc is a broader term where any of the nerve might be involved where as in Sciatica a specific nerve is involved.

Stenosis means narrowing; so when the space through which the spinal cord is passing; is narrowed; the condition is named as Stenosis of Spinal Canal or simply Spinal stenosis. This narrowing of spinal canal exerts pressure on spinal cord or the spinal nerve.

In patients with spinal stenosis, the nerves can become compressed, either within the spinal cord, or as the spinal nerves exit the spinal cord. Compression of these nerves leads to the common symptoms experienced by patients who have spinal stenosis. When the nerves are compressed, abnormal signals are sent to and from the brain, or sometimes the signals don't get past the area of compression. Therefore, patients with spinal stenosis may experience pain, numbness or weakness.

According to Ayurveda; each and every human being is unique on this earth. This uniqueness is because of the individualized combinations of three Doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha); everyone carries with him/ herself. Because of this uniqueness every body behaves and reacts differently. This also applies to Ayurvedic treatments. So there is no hard and fast that after having a particular no. of treatment sessions you will have visible results. In some cases we have seen that during the treatment sessions; patient was saying that he is not having any relief; but after completing the treatment session he even ringed us to tell that he is feeling better now.

The special thing we wish to share is that as we are not giving any painkiller (which only kills the sensation of pain not the cause of pain) so all the progresses experienced by the patient; is real progress; not a false sensation of relief.

While answering this question; we usually give a demonstrative example to the patients i.e. hold a pen in thumb and index finger from its center. Now move its one end in any direction. You will notice that the other end is also moving simultaneously. Same applies to our back bone also. All the vertebrae are connected to each other and work as the axis of our body. Once the axis will be disturbed at one end; disturbance on another end is just obvious. This is the reason that we notice that a patient with long history of lower backache experience pain in neck later on and vice versa.

In Ayurveda; we act on the root cause of the problem along with supporting all the body systems. It is not like modern medicine that an expert in joints does not care how his medication will affect the other system. Ayurveda understands the body as a single entity and we always take care how our treatment will affect different body systems.  This is the reason Ayurveda Treatment never has any side effect.

No, you never need a complete bed rest. With some precautions (which we will recommend to you); you can do your day to day activities easily.

It depends on the severity of the problem. You might not need any medication at all and simply by Panchakarma Procedure the problem can be treated.

The Panchakarma Procedures are equally effective for aged and young patients. In very old patients; because of too much wear and tear related with age the results might be slow but it is definite he will be benefited by the treatment.

Yes; it is definite that after having Ayurveda treatment from us you will live a perfectly normal life. After recovering properly from  the problem we will recommend you some easy yoga asanas and a schedule will be provided to you that after how much time you should have the panchakarma treatment session again. You should do the Yoga asanas as per recommendations and should have follow up treatment sessions. These follow up treatment sessions will work as body strengtheners and maintain its working normal. It is similar to the booster doses of an immunization schedule.

If you are following all the recommendations properly the problem will not recur; it is for sure.

As said above you should follow all the recommendations properly. If you are following all recommendations whole - heartedly; the problem will not recur.

The Panchakarma treatment is equally effective in the presence of some other health ailment also.

As the treatment will depend on the severity of the problem; so it is very hard to be specific about the charges of the treatment. One thing we wish to make sure is; there is nothing like "We charge thousand of rupees in the name of some Bhasmas or Gold preparations."  While taking treatment from us you will never feel cheated or some thing like that.

In the word ARTHRITIS; ARTHR means joint i.e. the area where two or more bones join with each other and ITIS means inflammation so ARTHRITIS stands for inflammation of a joint.

There are many types of Arthritis according to different classifications. The most important types of Arthritis are Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteo Arthritis. For more details about Arthritis please CLICK HERE

The Knee replacement is never a complete solution of the problem. We use to say to our patients "The human body is designed by the GOD and he never made spare parts for it". Any how much advanced science may become we can not design the spare body part which are useful enough to replace the natural body parts. So knee or any other joint replacement should be last option as after having joint replacement no one can help too much to restore the natural working of body.

Before answering this answer; we wish to tell to all that arthritis is not a problem of Calcium Metabolism and calcium has nothing to do with arthritis. In case of Osteoporosis also, researches have proven that there are no evidences that Calcium supplements prevent osteo porotic changes in the bones. Besides this; to meet a daily requirement of just about 1 gm of calcium we put body on risk of developing kidney stone (Calcium supplements are one of the major source of kidney stones) which can be easily achieved by natural resources like milk and other diary products, spinach, orange, almond and peas. Besides this calcium supplements also cause constipation and disturb the digestion process which hampers the absorption of other supplements also.

Ayurveda always believe in strengthening the body and its different part naturally. The Panchakarma procedures as recommended in Ayurveda restore and maintain the movements in all the body joints in natural way. Specially for pain in knee joint "JANU BASTI" is recommended. It strengthens muscles, ligaments and other structures making the knee joint and maintains its normal functioning.

In Joint Replacement Operation; the normal living joint structure is replaced by the non living artificial thing. So we can not think of nourishing it. But the Panchakarma can help in strengthening the adjoining muscle ligaments and making the movements easy.

Ayurveda also recommends eradicating the problem from root. The root cause of rheumatoid arthritis is always disturbed metabolism. So the main line of treatment is to bring back the metabolism to normal and to restore the structure and functioning of the joint affected. For proper treatment you should consult our physicians.
